All of that changed with one comment from Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride about 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith on Thursday that's suddenly made Sunday's rematch between these teams a lot more interesting.
Harbaugh calls Giants coach's 'murder' jab 'absurd'
In Harbaugh's statement, he called Gilbride's comment an "absurd analogy." Asked if he was referring the part about connecting holding on a football field to murder, Harbaugh declined to clarify, saying the statement speaks for himself.
"It's obvious that the Giants coaching staff's sole purpose is to use their high visibility to both criticize and influence officiating."
"Hey, better than being caught with it," he said, adding of Gilbride: "If he's trying to talk himself into some bulletin board stuff, good for him. Whatever they need to do."

Harbaugh then stepped to Converse Grey Low the podium and, in an anticlimactic moment, avoided all questions on the matter by pointing back to the statement and saying he'd "moved on."
"Smith is a beast on the inside," Gilbride said.
This whole situation turned into a joke in the Niners' locker room, with former Giants running back Brandon Converse Chuck Ii White
Wait, no. That wasn't it. Ah, here it is.
"That's one of my favorite dudes!" Jacobs yelled in the direction of Smith's locker.
Inside the locker room, Smith took a few swipes back while pleading innoncence.
About an hour before he addressed reporters on Friday, Harbaugh released a statement to the media in which he didn't Converse Shoes For Girls With Heels

"Kevin Gilbride's outrageous, irrational statement regarding Justin Smith's play is, first, an absurd analogy," Harbaugh said in the statement. "Second, it is an incendiary comment targeting one of the truly exemplary players in this league.
Smith took a playful approach when asked about that part.
"I mean, they're the defending Super Bowl champs," Smith said "Whatever. We'll be ready, they'll be ready, they'll come in, it'll be a good game. That's what it's all about."
Jacobs then yelled to his teammates, "You'd better watch it! Gilbride will come running out on the field after y'all!" At that point, he did a spot on impression of Gilbride's walk, complete with the limp due to the Achilles' tendon issues that have been bothering Gilbride the past few years.
By that, Smith meant the comments this week from Giants coach Tom Coughlin, who claimed no one is giving his team a chance to win this game.
"Well I mean, there's nothing to call. I don't know what he's talking about, to be honest with you," Smith said. "Whatever they need to do. And I read some of their stuff: 'No respect.'"

Truth is, most of the week to this point, there had actually been a lot of talk about the respect between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants, despite the physical nature of their last few meetings and the Giants' victory over the Niners in the NFC Championship Game.
Yeah, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh didn't take too kindly to that one.
"He's strong, he does as good a job of grabbing a hold of offensive linemen and allowing those twists to take place," Gilbride said. "He never gets called for it, so he gets away with murder."
