unselfish guy on our football team. He did what he had to do, which was to block for Tron the whole year. I hate Tron got hurt, but Paul had the opportunity to come in and play and did a great job for us."The next year, Vigor opened the season by beating Theodore 45 0, then defeated visiting Carver from Montgomery 43 14. That was the most points any team would score on Vigor all season. In the rest of the Wolves' regular season games, they beat Blount 19 0, McGill Toolen 29 0, Shaw 31 7, LeFlore 27 13, Murphy 24 0 and Fairhope 21 3. The playoff scores were even more one sided, starting with four shutout victories over Mary Montgomery 21 0, Shaw 37 0, Fairhope 35 0 and Lee of Montgomery 14 0. Vigor completed its 13 0 season by beating Berry 41 7 in the 6A championship game at Legion Field.Vigor was selected by ESPN as the national high school football champion for 1988 Converse Shoes For Men White

Hall of Fame to induct prep football team against which all others are measured

"You can go over the 25 years since we won it," said Darrell "Lectron" Williams, a running back for the 1988 Vigor team, "and see the great players that have gone on to college and the pros from this area. But it's amazing that every time a good team would come along and look like they're having a lot of success and going undefeated and winning their games, the first thing people say is: Do you think this team is as good as that 1988 Vigor team? I mean, every single time. And then, every single year, the experts will say, 'Nah, this team can't hold a candle to that team.'"Most of those teams will be so good at one thing that it will be enough for them to win their football games. But we were good everywhere. Every single position, there was not a weakness. I think that's something that probably will never be done again on a football field to have that type talent on a football field and have that kind of success. Usually, when you have that much talent, there's dissension, there's jealously, there's players wanting to get more glory than other ones. But we all played together, and we were one family. I think that's what made us special."The 1988 Vigor High School football Wolves will become the second team to be inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday night, joining the 1947 Mobile Bears Southern Association championship team."There have been some pretty decent teams around the city since our team," said Roosevelt Patterson, a 1988 All State lineman for Vigor, "but I don't think there's a team that compares to our team. We had all the pieces to the puzzle. Teams like that probably come along once in a lifetime. We were hard working and talented. Most teams that might be talented, they don't be hard workers. We worked all year 'round. I think it's going to take a while for another team to be like that '88 team."The 1988 Wolves won the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A football championship, but that's too plain a description of the Wolves' dominance. In some ways, Vigor's rise to glory started when it lost its second game of the 1987 season 20 17 to Lee in Montgomery."When we played Robert E. Lee the first time," Vigor quarterback Kelvin Simmons said, "and they were ranked in the country at that time and we played them that close, I was thinking, 'Wait until they get a load of us next year, because we'll be back.'"The 1987 Wolves ran off 12 victories after the loss, culminating in a 19 13 victory over Shades Valley in the AHSAA Class 6A championship game at Legion Field in Birmingham."We had a young football team," assistant coach James Perine said of the 1987 squad. "Those guys worked with the coaches pushing them after we almost got beat the first game against Theodore, and we went upstate and lost to Robert E. Lee. If you didn't beat us the first time, you sure weren't going to beat us the second time. We came back the next year, the players every week came out and worked harder than they worked the week before. They would set records without even knowing they were setting records. We just went out and played that hard each week."Vigor got a rematch against Lee in the 1987 state quarterfinals, winning Converse Dainty Black Sale 28 14 in Montgomery."It was tougher our junior year," Patterson said of the Wolves' back to back state titles. "The championship game wasn't so hard, but the playoff games against Robert E. Lee and Jeff Davis, they were tough games."We had players even on the bench that probably could have replaced some of us, and we probably wouldn't have missed a beat," Simmons said. "Like Tron getting hurt in the championship game, and Paul Caldwell coming in. He was the most Converse Tennis Shoes For Women
