On April 20, 2006 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) took action against the Onkwehonwehn people (First People) from the Six Nations Native Reserve in response to peaceful protest that stopped the construction of a housing development upon disputed land.

Caledonia, usually a quiet growing little town of 11,000 became the flashpoint for the eruption of conflict related to very long standing land rights disputes between the Onkwehonwehn of the Grand River Territory and the Crown, represented by the Canadian Federal Government. This was a very distressing time for both Six Nations and Caledonia communities as conflict overflowed to the streets.
RCMP Division Air Services helicopter provided the perfect vantage point for a fantastic aerial view of the Wampum Belt which was made up of 2000 students from Six Nations, Mississaugaus of the New Credit First Nation and children from neighbouring communities of Haldimand and Norfolk County, Hamilton, Brantford and Burlington.
Throughout the year, via letters, shared art, and sometimes gifts, the students shared their interests, culture, and friendships grew. The Pal Project has grown to provide a venue for positive relationship building between First Nations communities and their neighbours at many schools.
17th, marked the end of the year for the program and included a traditional Gathering that brought together 2000 students from Six Nations, Mississaugaus of the New Credit First Nation and many children from the neighbouring communities of Haldimand and Norfolk County, Hamilton, Brantford and Burlington.

Annual Pal Gathering on June 17, 2013: To honor the 400th anniversary of the creation of the Two Row Wampum Belt, 2000 Pen Pals became purple and white beads to form a gigantic, 180 foot long, living version of the belt at Stony Creek Battlefield Park in the Grand River Valley of Ontario, Canada. Pen Pals is a fast growing group of classrooms . . . First Nations and neighbors . . . whose young students write letters back and forth to create mutual understanding within their communitie
Determined to change the imagery and stories the young people were exposed to, she began a Pen Pal Project in 2007 with her class of Native students at Six Nations. Her class wrote letters to a classroom of non Native students in Caledonia. They in turn wrote back.
The event was titled, Living Wampum Belt and was especially meaningful as it celebrated 200 years of an ally relationship between Six Nations and the Crown since the War of 1812 by acknowledging the significance of the Two Row Wampum Treaty of 1613.
